Done with Rushkoff’s “Playing the Future” 10/10

October 20th, 2006

Took me a while to get through this one. Rushkoffs’ Playing the Future: how kids’ culture can teach us to thrive in an age of chaos is a very impressive read. Douglas R. illustrates a cultural transition that moves from linearity to chaos, from duality to holism, from mechanism to animism, from gravity to consensual, from metaphor to recapitulation, and from God to nature, all through the lenses of role-playing games, comic books, 3-d animation, and computer games. By far, the central theme of P the F is cultural movement we experience towards an organized chaos (fractel being the metaphorical shape Rushkoff uses) and ultimetly higher levels of organizations.

Rushkoff is a very talented writer being able to string together long and complex sentances that connect many different ideas in a relatively short space. This work is of impressive scope and it definetly dives deep into the nuances and intricacies of kids’ culture and thier interpretation of the world. An excellent read 10/10.

Finished Condemned: criminal origins

October 10th, 2006

This is a mystery/horror/adventure game that gravitates between an FPS and a FPA. That game is story based and story led, an FBI agent framed while investigating a murder, has a female FBI agent that helps with clues and evidance and some other spooky characters that help him find murderer. There’s not much to stray off the main plot and solutions are pretty much handed out without to much guess work. Graphics is strange. Not very sharp but definetly complimetary to the game. The sound, light and shadow play and cut scenes do create an eerie atmosphere that fits nicely with the genre but there are not many surprises. Other than the occasional fall through the floor or zombie like vagbond climbing a chain link or dark passing shadows or a breaking window, there aren’t enough scares to really makes this title scary. Tons of weapons you can pick up, or simply tear from wall, anything from pipes, 2×4, planks, sticks, and even drawers. There are guns in the game but very little ammo which makes them insignificant and not much fun to use. The game was o.k. to play but I was exepcting a twist all the way up to the end. In this genre, Indigio Prophecy was much more pleasurable. 6/10
